Abstract
Background: Studies have been conducted in Korea to examine the association between prevalence of diabetes and carotene intake, particularly in the elderly or diabetic patients residing in a specific area. However, no studies have been conducted by using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. This study was performed to evaluate the association between prevalence of diabetes and carotene intake in adults who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
Methods: A total 4,390 subjects aged 19-64 years were enrolled in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013-2014). Diabetes prevalence data were surveyed through interviews, and data on carotene intake levels were obtained indirectly through a food frequency questionnaire survey. The general linear-model complex-samples t-test and logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the association between carotene intake and diabetes.
Results: No statistically significant association was found between carotene intake and diabetes (P=0.395).
Conclusion: In this study, no association was found between carotene intake and diabetes. There is inconsistency between results from this study and those from other studies. Further objective and prospective studies are warranted for a definitive conclusion.
