The Influence of Coffee Consumption for Smoking Behavior

Abstract
Background: The adult smoking rate is high in Korea compared to the rest of the world. To reduce the harmful effects of smoking, the importance of smoking cessation has been emphasized. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between smoking and coffee consumption, which has increased in recent years.
Methods: The study subjects were 19 years of age or older with smoking experience who were surveyed using a questionnaire based on the data from the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2013. We compared the characteristics of two groups after dividing the subjects into current smokers and past smokers, and performed logistic regression analysis of the relationship between coffee intake and smoking status.
Results: As the consumption of coffee increased in adults with a history of smoking, the odds ratio for successful smoking cessation showed a statistically significant decrease. As the consumption of green tea increased, the odds ratio for successful smoking cessation showed a statistically significant increase.
Conclusion: It appears that reducing coffee intake and increasing that of green tea may help smoking cessation in Korean adults with a history of smoking.
