Association between Body Mass Index and Health-Related Quality of Life in Elderly Women: Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2011

Abstract
Background: The low quality of life among overweight elderly women in Korea has recently become a problem in the field of health and social affairs. This study evaluated the influence of obesity on the quality of life in elderly women by assessing the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in women over 65 years of age.
Methods: We divided the BMIs of 1,609 women over 65 years of age in into quartiles, and then classified the participants into groups with satisfactory and unsatisfactory HRQoL based on median EuroQol five dimensions questionnaire (EQ-5D) index values. We assessed the relationship between individual variables, including EQ-5D indices and BMIs, which were expected to influence HRQoL. We performed multivariate logistic regression analysis to evaluate the relationship between satisfactory HRQoL and BMI.
Results: Compared to those in the first quartile (<21.97 kg/m2), which was control group, participants in the third quartile (24.05-26.28 kg/m2) had a 1.441-fold increased risk of unsatisfactory HRQoL (P<0.05). HRQoL decreased as age increased and household income and education decreased; in addition, there was a relationship between anemia, stroke, coronary artery disease, arthritis, and asthma and an increased potential for low HRQoL.
Conclusion: Elderly women with BMI values between 24.05 kg/m2 and 26.28 kg/m2 had low HRQoL compared to that of the group with BMI values below 21.97 kg/m2.
