Association of Allergic Diseases with Body Mass Index, Waist Circumference in Korean Adolescents: The Sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013, 2014)

Abstract
Background: The prevalence of allergic diseases and obesity in Korean adolescents has increased. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between body mass index, waist circumference, and the prevalence of allergic diseases in Korean adolescents.
Methods: We analyzed the correlation between the body mass index, waist circumference, and the prevalence of asthma, atopic dermatitis, and allergic rhinitis by assessing questionnaires and the anthropometric data collected from 1,500 adolescents aged between 10 and less than 19 years who participated in the 6th National Health and Nutrition Survey.
Results: The body mass index and waist circumference of adolescents did not show any significant correlation with the prevalence of allergic diseases. The prevalence of atopic dermatitis decreased with increasing age in male adolescents (odds ratio [OR], 0.857; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.781–0.941; P=0.001). While the prevalence of allergic rhinitis decreased with increasing age in female adolescents (OR, 0.917; 95% CI, 0.850–0.990; P=0.027). The prevalence of allergic rhinitis was found to be higher in female adolescents from high income households than in those from lower income households (OR, 1.988; 95% CI, 1.022–3.867; P=0.043).
Conclusion: Increasing age of Korean adolescents was accompanied by a corresponding decrease in the prevalence of some allergic diseases. While the prevalence of allergic rhinitis increased in Korean female adolescents from higher income households. Body mass index and waist circumference were not related with prevalence of allergic diseases.
