Association between Vitamin D and Allergic Rhinitis in Korean Adults through the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey VI (2013-2014)

Abstract
Background: Vitamin D has been suggested to be involved in various biological processes, besides in the maintenance of the homeostasis of calcium and bones, which has been emphasized in the past. Recently, a hypothesis has been suggested that there is a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and allergic diseases. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between vitamin D and allergic rhinitis in Korean adults using the data from the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey VI.
Methods: We used data acquired between January 2013 and December 2014 in the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey VI. 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels were measured by performing blood tests, and individual characteristics were determined based on self-reported questionnaires, interviews, and physical examination. Those who did not undergo blood tests, questionnaires, or medical history and physical examination were excluded.
Results: The association between vitamin D and allergic rhinitis in Korean adults participated in the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey VI showed that the prevalence of allergic rhinitis was higher in women with increased vitamin D levels.
Conclusion: The relationship between vitamin D and allergic rhinitis in Korean adults was different for men and women. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis was higher in women with increased vitamin D levels.
