Associations between Groups with Cohabiting Parents, Single Parent, Orphan or Not, and Body Mass Index among South Korean Adolescents

Abstract
Background: Obesity among South Korean Adolescents is increasing and is related to their heath and daily life in adulthood. There are a growing number of students with single parents these days. We evaluated the number of between adolescents with cohabiting single parents and their body mass index (BMI) and abnormal weight, including obesity.
Methods: This study was a secondary analysis of the data collected from the 2016 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. The sample included 65,528 adolescents. The questionnaires of the survey included sex , living with dual or single parents, orphan or other living condition, eating habits, physical activity, social economy status, and parents’ education. Adolescents were classified into four groups: cohabiting parents, single parent, orphan, and others; It was analyzed using chi-square test, t-test, analysis of variance, and binary logistic repression analysis using IBM SPSS 24.0 (IBM Co., USA) and R Program (R Foundation for Statistical Computing, Austria).
Results: There were differences in the mean levels of BMI among groups, such as boys with cohabiting parents and those with single parents (21.4±3.6 kg/m2 and 21.7±3.8 kg/m2), those with cohabiting parents and others (21.4±3.6 kg/m2 and 29.1±3.5 kg/m2), those with single parents and orphans (20.5±3.3 kg/m2 and 20.5±3.3 kg/m2), and orphans and others (21.7±3.8 kg/m2 and 29.1±3.5 kg/m2); among girls, those with cohabiting parents and with single parents (20.6±2.9 kg/m2 and 20.9±3.0 kg/m2), those with dual parents and others (20.6±2.9 kg/m2 and 21.1±2.8 kg/m2), and orphans and others (20.7±3.3 kg/m2 and 21.1±2.8 kg/m2). The odds ratio of single parents to cohabiting parents was 1.076 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.004–1.153) and that of orphans was 0.692 (CI, 0.491–0.974) after adjustment.
Conclusion: Students living with single parents showed increased BMI and higher prevalence of overweight and obesity than those with cohabiting parents.
