Abstract
Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the Palliative Prognostic Index (PPI) and Objective Prognostic Score (OPS) on the incidence of survival for less than 3 weeks according to the cut-off values in Korean patients with terminal cancer.
Methods: Patients admitted to Gwanguju Veterans Hospital hospice ward between November 2016 and May 2017 were interviewed. At the time of the patient’s death, a retrospective review was conducted by interviewing their physicians. One hundred and thirty-six patients were studied. Logistic regression analysis was used.
Results: PPI ≥6 and OPS ≥3 were statistically significant. In terms of odds ratios, PPI ≥6 was the most influential variable for survival of less than 3 weeks. In case of PPI ≥6, survival for less than 3 weeks increased 29.501 times, and for OPS ≥3, survival for less than 3 weeks increased 4.712 times.
Conclusion: The effectiveness of PPI and OPS was confirmed for each cut-off value and survival for less than 3 weeks, and PPI was found to have a greater effect on survival than OPS.
