Effect of Magnetic Acupuncture Attachment on PC6 (Neiguan) on Autonomic Nervous System

Abstract
Background: PC6 (Neiguan) is known to be a good acupoint for treating postoperative and post-chemotherapy nausea and vomiting. In addition, acupuncture at this point has been reported to stabilize the sympathetic nervous system. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of non-invasive magnetic acupuncture on the autonomic nervous system by measuring heart rate variability (HRV).
Methods: This study had a randomized crossover design, including 20 healthy volunteers. Magnetic acupuncture was performed on either PC6 (Neiguan) or ST36 (Zusanli) based on a randomization table, and HRV was measured before and 20 minutes after acupuncture. One week later, we repeated the procedure on a different acupoint. We measured HRV using BFM 5000 (Medicore, Korea).
Results: Of the 20 subjects who completed the trial, 5 were male and 15 were female (mean age: 26.00±3.00 years and 27.07±2.60 years respectively; overall mean age: 26.8±2.67 years). Magnetic acupuncture at PC6 (Neiguan) resulted in a significantly greater percentage change in square root of the mean of the sum of the square of differences between adjacent normal to normal intervals compared to that at ST36 (Zusanli) (P=0.05).
Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that magnetic acupuncture at PC6 (Neiguan) has a positive effect on autonomic nervous system function.
