Fast Food and Obesity in Child and Adult

Abstract
Background: It is known that there is a relationship between fast food intake and obesity; however, the association according to age remains unclear. The aim was to review the association between fast food intake and obesity in children and adults.
Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted using the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases. We assessed whether fast food intake and obesity were associated in children and adults.
Results: Most of the studies of adults (12 of 14 articles) were associated with fast food intake and obesity and overweight, but only 7 of 13 articles regarding pediatric cases were found to be positively related. In contrast, one study of adults and six studies of children and adolescents did not reveal an association between fast food intake and obesity.
Conclusion: The relationship between fast food intake and obesity was consistently positive in most studies of adults but was inconsistently positive in studies of adolescents and children. These results may be affected by the growth of adolescents and children, but various personal, socioeconomic, and environmental factors can influence the relationship between fast food intake and obesity, and the eating habits of individuals are also involved. Therefore, a well-designed observational study involving a cohort study is required, and if possible, a clinical trial associated with the outcome of this study will provide a more accurate association between fast food intake and obesity.
