The Association of Vitamin D Status and Dyslipidemia in Korean Adults Aged 40 Years and Older

Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between blood levels of vitamin D and dyslipidemic odds ratios in Koreans older than 40 years of age using data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey.
Methods: Based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey conducted from 2010 to 2012, 12,269 individuals (5,166 men and 7,103 women) were selected. In order to confirm the correlation between dyslipidemia, obesity index, and vitamin D status, we divided the individuals into two groups, the normal weight and obesity groups, and the tertile of serum 25(OH)D concentration was used as the independent variable. The relationship between vitamin D concentration and dyslipidemia was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression.
Results: Serum 25(OH)D levels were not significantly associated with triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P>0.05) in the normal weight group, while total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were associated (P=0.002, 0.02, respectively), but no significant trend was observed. In addition, logistic regression analysis showed that serum 25(OH)D was not significantly associated with the odds ratios of dyslipidemia after adjustments for age, sex, income level, smoking status, alcohol consumption, and risk factors (hypertension, diabetes) (P>0.05).
Conclusion: Serum vitamin D levels were not independently associated with serum lipid levels and odds ratios of dyslipidemia in Koreans older than 40 years of age.
